But it's on the way . . .

I did some reconnaissance for airfares to the West Coast. My favorite was the airline that would charge me about $500 for the following route: SLC to JFK (New York), connect with another flight that would take me to my West Coast destination. A 14 hour trip. I could drive there faster.

A New Neighbor

I have a foot of snow in my back yard, so it was inevitable this little guy would appear.

A Cold Poem For A Cold Day

Dr. Rex Ellis recited the following poem at his "The Big Read: To Kill A Mockingbird" visit to Orem.
It really made me think about how we all need to work together. Remember to STAY WARM!

The Cold Within

Six humans trapped by happenstance
In dark and bitter cold
Each possessed a stick of wood--
Or so the story's told.
Their dying fire in need of logs,
But the first one held hers back,
For, of the faces around the fire,
She noticed one was black.
The next one looked cross the way
Saw one not of his church,
And could not bring himself to give
The fire his stick of birch.
The third one sat in tattered clothes
He gave his coat a hitch,
Why should his log be put to use
To warm the idle rich?
The rich man just sat back and thought
Of wealth he had in store,
And keeping all that he had earned
From the lazy, shiftless poor.
The black man's face bespoke revenge
As the fire passed from his sight,
For he saw in his stick of wood
A chance to spite the white.
And the last man of this forlorn group
Did nought except for gain,
Giving just to those who gave
Was how he played the game,
Their sticks held tight in death's stilled hands
Was proof enough of sin;
They did not die from cold without--
They died from cold within.

A New Feel Good Internet Hangout-try Freecycle.org!

OK, I have a new place to hang out, one that makes me feel good. I am trying break the bands of packrat-dom and am using the link in the title and D.I. as my helpers.

I have yet to acquire anything at Freecycle (there has been good stuff, but I am trying to downsize), but have given a number of things away. I can't believe the stuff that is given away. Appliances, clothes, plants, craft items, decor, beds, cribs, books, spaghetti-os and soup! One can request items too.

The rules are simple and the feeling is good. Go try Freecycle.org

I Hope To Be Like Her When I Grow Up

I was in the City Manager's office today and an elderly woman came to the front desk asking for assistance. She was going out of town and wasn't sure where to put her donation for the Food and Care Coalition. It was a gift card for a substantial dollar amount. "It is for the Food and Care Coalition to purchase perishables." Our Assistant City Manager, not wanting to put the gift card in the foyer sleigh, assured her the donation would get to its destination. Thank you, mysterious resident! How cool is that? The true spirit of Christmas.
